My Trance Story

Ian Betts

Where did you discover trance?

I first discovered trance at the Gallery in 1995/6 when I first saw Paul Oakenfold play. I'll never forget it, the feeling that came over me as I stood in the middle of the dancefloor and lost myself in the music he was playing which at the time was unlike anything else I had heard. It was at the start of his goa trance period and from that point on I just lapped up every available piece of music I could .

Who has been your biggest influence?

I would say my biggest influences have been Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold and Steve Lee (Gallery resident). The other DJ I have always used as a role model is John Fleming.

What moment would you live again if you could?

Probably the opening night of a club called the Complex back in 1996. Sasha and Oakenfold played the whole night and it was simply epic.

Where in the world is trance-central?

Anywhere there is a total solar eclipse.
