Where did you discover trance?
I was always listening to this 'repetitive drone' (that the older generation called it) music from the evolution of house music in the 80's. During this time Stoke (where I still live) was where the Sasha and co played their first gigs and their recorded sets used to do the rounds on the school yard. I would take the TDK chrome tapes home and copy them on my prized tape to tape recorder (Yes I know its against copyright laws now, but I didn't back then). I didn't know what this music was called, but 'house' was always the most common term.
Then whilst visiting a newly opened record store in the early 90's I heard a slightly different kind of music that sounded like Jean Michelle Jarre, but the drums were in time, and it was similar to house music. I asked the spotty bearded youth (how he could grow such a long beard at his age was beyond me at that time) what the music was called, and he responded with "Trance" amidst other mumble and jargon. From then on I was hooked.
Who has been your biggest influence?
I have never really had a particular influence. As a child my tastes would change so fast that I would have a new influence every week. I would always listen to Oakenfold from his beginnings, but he is one person from one genre and I would listen to everything from happy hardcore to cheesy euro style trance (forgive me please!).
What moment would you live again if you could?
My whole childhood. Nothing can buy innocence.
Where in the world is trance-central?
Is it near Springfield? Years ago there would be a big difference in every part of the world in terms of the type of people you see and their musical tastes. You couldn't go to some cities and play trance, the same as you couldn't go to some cities and play progressive. Since the internet has become a major source of musical distribution things have changed. Everywhere I now go I see very similar people, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable individuals all with a similar musical outlook when it comes to trance music. Now no matter where you are playing there are always people who like trance. This is a very indirect way of saying "I am not sure where Trance central is, its everywhere, everyday"
